Well, i had a great labour day! invited sean and his sister over for lunch. Oh yeah, sean baked the softest brown sugar cookies ever!!! Thanks man, my mum was quite pleased with it (I am savouring one now.). mum did a great chicken salad as well (leftover chicken was turned into a wicked chicken mayo sandwich for me this morning).
then it was off to national museum for the superstars exhibtion! yes, i saw gackt's photo, but that's not the point. all four walls were splashed with glamourous portraits of celebrities - each portrait captured the essence of asian beauty. I especially love the way where they were taken with a white background with a cool bluish-white lighting, which complimented nicely with the asian warm skintones. all the more reasons for me to order the book... at $600. worth it, but then again i am a student on a limited budget. sean came up with a possible solution - we share the price of a book. i am still deciding~
since we were at the museum, we went to have a look at other exhibitions as well. but most of them required an entrance fee. i love the installation piece held above the connecting walkway - red chandeliers swinging lazily in an almost hypnotic way. It's pretty soothing to look at them.
Dinner was at shimbashi soba, specialising in, well, freshly made soba - sean's sister ordered cold soba with yam dipping sauce, which we had no idea how to eat. well, i yahoo-ed, and here's the answer: shoyu first, then tororo (yam dipping sauce), then eat. make sure that you don't fully immerse the soba in either sauce so you can fully appreciate the natural flavour of the soba noodles as well. so there! i had a relatively idiot-proof dish of cold tempura soba, and it was refreshing and light.
And the finale - dessert at canale. it was my first time there, and that is the place to go for any dessert freak. dainty cakes, each a minature work of art, were placed behind a glass counter for us to select. of course, canale does have freshly made desserts like souffles and crepes, but the cakes were too attractive - i settled with choux pastry filled with lucious strawberry cream. we also ordered 6 macarons in 3 flavours - passionfruit, pistachios and rose. it was my first time having macarons, and they have an interesting texture. Initially i expected them to be meringue-like, but they are more crumbly and chewy. the passionfruit was good, but the rose was a little over-powering. speaking of meringues, i was quite tempted to get the meringues they had displayed on their counter as well - huge fluffy clouds of violet and rose. Ahhh.. heaven.
